{Brer Rabbit gets Trendy}

I had a very fun weekend of working in the briar patch....err, that would be my sewing room, which sometimes resembles a briar patch! After attending market, I came home and decided that to make it in the children's wear market, I needed to make a few changes, mainly one that involves following the trends. Don't get me wrong - my first love is the classics and it always will be my favorite, but following the latest trends is a must if I want my designs to be a success in this fast-paced fashion market. I personally think I can sit on the fence post and have a shot at success either way, so that's where I'm at! With that in mind, I started working on a new design - one that lends itself to classic and trendy! I started out with the trendy side and here's what I came up with.
Oh, I know you are probably thinking, "oh paaaleeese, not another twirly skirt pattern!" Or, you might think this is kinda cute! Either way, this isn't just another twirly skirt pattern. This one has built-in bloomers and more...
What's the "more", you might ask? Well, stay-tuned because the pattern that Brer Rabbit drafted  has a secret ingredient that allows you to make up at least 8, yes, I said eight different multi-sized patterns within itself! How, you might ask? Well, stay-tuned, an eBook is currently under construction in the Briar Patch!

{Brer Rabbit goes to market}

I had the awesome opportunity of going to the Birmingham Creative Needlework Market with my friend Sara Norris on Monday. What could be more fun than going to a sewing market with a friend who shares the same passion for sewing as yourself? We met some wonderful designers who were so helpful in sharing their expertise with us - they have no idea how much we appreciate the tips they were willing to share, as well as their friendships! Here's a slideshow of a small sampling of a few of the booths at market.
Both Sara and I walked away from market with all kinds of ideas rolling in our heads! We both have a love for the classics, but can see that the market is following the latest trends. Following the trends is very important and I believe that you can follow a trend, but also appeal to those who still love the classic of traditional children's wear. I am excited about the door of opportunity that has opened before me this week. I have some amazing news to share in the very near future, but until then, Brer Rabbit has some work to do. He is going to be putting some of the ideas he has in his head and work very hard in the Briar Patch so that he can show you what he's up to!

{Brer Rabbit's Briar Patch}

I think most of my readers probably well know who Brer Rabbit is, or have at least heard of him. I thot just for fun, I would share some history on him and how it came about that I chose to name my business "Brer Rabbit Designs".

Back in the days of the old plantations, the slaves would tell stories of this feisty little rabbit to their children; to teach them that no matter how bad the situation is there's always a way out of it; to never lose hope. These folktales were collected in 1880 by American newspaper man Joel Chandler Harris, who published them in Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings. Harris created the character Uncle Remus, a grandfatherly storyteller who had once been a slave. In a rich, southern dialect, Uncle Remus related the adventures of Brer Rabbit and his friends to a little boy from the "Big House" on the Old Plantation. Harris wanted these stories to be shared and preserved forever, for as the slaves knew: These stories aren't just about foxes and rabbits, they're about all of us.

I love all the old classic tales from when I was a child and I have especially loved the tales of Brer Rabbit. I think what I like best is how the tales are written; in the rich southern dialect of the Old South. One of my favorite quotes from the books is "Yessir, Brotha Fox, I was born and bred in the Briar Patch!"
As I was thinking about "re-inventing" myself, I wanted to have a name for my new business that would have meaning behind it. Brer Rabbit came to my mind quite quickly - I love him because he's feisty, full of wit and no matter how bad his situation is, he always find a way out! Umm, that kinda describes me and many circumstances of my life!
I also love Brer Rabbit because he's a classic and he's got Old South charm! The motto for the southern town that I live in is, "Old South Charm, New South Progress". With that in mind, Brer Rabbit Designs just seemed to be a perfectly fitting name for me to use. I love the classic, Old South Charm in Classic Children's wear and design, but I also like to incorporate that into today's fashion. My goal with Brer Rabbit Designs is to create classic designs, both as sewing patterns and machine embroidery design and to inspire you to use them to create beautiful garments for the little ones you love to sew for.
